Character Promotion Guidelines

Historically, many sims have used character promotions as a way of recognizing and rewarding the contributions of players. While it is important to celebrate these things, the practice has often led to challenges around development and storytelling as out-of-character honors out-paced in-character growth and plotlines. For this reason, we have decided that character development, as opposed to time served with the simulation, will be the primary factor when determining character rank.

Promotions for all playing and non-playing characters will be determined by the command staff in consultation with the player to whom the character(s) belong.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Our fleet’s community policies state that commanding officer characters cannot exceed the rank of captain without approval from the Pegasus Fleet admiralty.

  • Despite what we see on the shows or films, it is extremely rare for any member of the crew to hold rank equal to (or greater than) the commanding officer. (Note: Guest appearances from other ships, stations, etc. would be an exception to this.)

  • Within the crew itself, it is not often that characters would hold a rank greater than that of the person(s) supervising them (e.g. department head, executive officer, etc.).

  • Cadet ranks should be used sparingly. Any cadet with a rank below that of third year should have a strong reason for their presence aboard the ship as most cadets do not participate in their first field training assignment until the third year.

  • Warrant officer ranks (especially higher grades) should also be used sparingly. These officers will be rare aboard ship and will be highly experienced individuals who rose from the non-commissioned officer (NCO) ratings.

Follow-Up

Questions, comments, and concerns are always welcomed and should be directed to a member of the sim command staff via private message or mail.
